Stephen Watya, MMed, DPH, MBChB
Founder Member & Chair of the Board
He is a Urological Surgeon, Principal Investigator and Executive Director of Africa Medical and Behavioral Sciences Organization (AMBSO). Dr. Watya is a senior research fellow with Makerere University College of Health Sciences - School of Public Health. His research specialties are in prostate cancer where he has been involved in a number of urological studies including a Case-Control study with intent of contributing to understanding the genetic basis of prostate cancer in African men as well as build capacity for Cancer research in Uganda and Africa as a whole. He is also the Principal Investigator of AMBSO’s Population Health Surveillance cohort Study conducted in Wakiso and Hoima districts of Uganda.

Gertrude Nakigozi, PhD, MPH, MBChB
Founder Member
Dr. Nakigozi holds a PhD in Epidemiology, and a MPH from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as well as medical training from Makerere University in Uganda. She has been involved in a number of complex protocols including giving clinical oversight on several Clinical trials conducted at AMBSO as Co-Investigator. She has also authored a number of publications in peer reviewed journals of high impact factor.
Godfrey Kigozi, PhD, MPH, MBChB
Founder Member
He is an epidemiologist who has co-authored over 100 peer reviewed publications. He received medical training at Makerere University, MPH at Johns Hopkins University and a PhD in epidemiology from Makerere University. He has vast experience in conducting Clinical trials for HIV prevention, including leading the team that conducted the Male Circumcision randomized clinical trial in Rakai. He is also a senior Scientist and an Investigator on a number of studies that AMBSO currently conducts.
Joseph Kagaayi, MBChB, MPH, PhD
Board Member
Dr. Kagaayi holds a PhD from Case Western Reserve University in the US, MPH at Johns Hopkins University and a medical training from Makerere University. He is an epidemiologist with over 20 years of experience in Epidemiological research. His research work has been published in leading Journals including PubMed, UK Scientific Journal as well as the JHU Public Health Journal. On top of his roles as a member of the AMBSO Board, he also gives mentorship support to the Junior Investigators in Scientific writing and publication as well as ensuring scientific integrity of AMBSO’s Population Cohort studies.
Fred Nalugoda, PhD, MHSc, B. Stat
Founder Member
An epidemiologist with a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Makerere University and a MHSc from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a key member of AMBSO’s Research leadership team and directly supported the establishment of the AMBSO Population Cohort study. On top of his roles as a member of the Board, he also gives oversight to the organization’s operational systems as well as giving technical support to AMBSO’s data processes and applications.
Grace Kigozi, BA SS, MPH
Founder Member
Grace has a MPH from Johns Hopkins University and Bachelor in Social Sciences from Makerere University. She is a National trainer of Good Clinical Practices courses and for over two decades, she has been at the fore front of setting up Quality Control and Quality Assurance systems including training of Research Assistants and Quality Control personnel to collect credible research data and also handle QC 1 and QC II level activities for both Behavioral and Clinical research.
Deusdedit Kiwanuka, Dip, BA, MA
Founder Member
He has over 15 years’ experience in designing, implementing, evaluating, and managing programs and services for survivors of Sexual and Gender Based Violence. He played a crucial role in designing and testing the SASA methodology to prevent and respond to GBV; this has since been adopted as a global intervention. Mr. Kiwanuka is one of the Investigators at AMBSO and is in charge of designing Psycho-social support and GBV response Programmes.
Leadership
Stephen Mugamba, BA, Dip
Program Director
He has a First-Class Degree in Mass Communication with a bias in Health Communication and a Diploma in Education from Kyambogo University. He is currently the Program Director for AMBSO and has over 13 years’ experience in leading and coordinating research projects from the Rakai Health Sciences Program.
James Nkale, MPH
Technical and Grants
He has vast experience in clinical/ curative practice, prevention research, and research in non-communicable diseases. While in Rakai, James coordinated the implementation of the Male Circumcision RCT and has subsequently given technical support to the National roll out efforts
Emmanuel Kyasanku, BSc, Dip
Program Coordinator
Emmanuel has a Master's degree in Public Health and a training in clinical medicine and community Health. Currently he is the coordinator of Research and HIV prevention programmes for AMBSO. He is in charge of the Field investigation roles for AMBSO’s Population Health Surveillance cohort study.
Robert Bulamba, Bsc. Stat
Data Manager
Robert is the stationed Data management supervisor and statistician giving onsite statistical support to all AMBSO research projects. Robert has a degree in Economics and Statistics from Kyambogo University and has also had short trainings in Research conduct and data analysis from the Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS).
Dennis Nakaana, BPSCM
Finance and Administration
Dennis has a Bachelor’s degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management and is a finalist of a Master’s Program in Business Administration. He is also a member of CIPS (a professional body of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (UK). Mr. Nakaana has over 7 years’ experience in Procurement & Logistics management, Project planning, Administration, and Finance and Accounting for nonprofit organizations. He is currently AMBSO’s Head of Finance and Administration where he is responsible for overseeing the organization’s day-to-day operations, human resource management, procurement and financial operations and reporting.
Racheal Joy Nalugoda; Biop, M. Org Psych
HR Officer
Ms. Nalugoda has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and currently pursuing an MA in Organizational Psychology at Makerere University. She has experience as a manager in institutional and productive enterprises with strong leadership and administration skills. Since 2018, Ms. Nalugoda has been AMBSO’s Human Resource Officer where she takes lead in the recruitment, performance monitoring and evaluation, remuneration and general staff welfare in the organization.
