Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision at AMBSO
Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) is on of the proven HIV prevention packages. AMBSO is proud to be one of the providers of these services in the communities.
AMBSO venturing in VMMC
Since 2017, AMBSO has been working under a Foundation partnership with Uro Care Ltd to implement a Voluntary Medical Male circumcision (VMMC) program aimed at HIV prevention in a sub-grant arrangement with the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI).
The Uro Care and AMBSO partnership
The working relationship between AMBSO and Uro Care Ltd is hard to disentangle. This is how it was designed to work by the founders of both entities who also happen to be the same. Therefore, a number of activities under the mandate of Uro care Ltd, including research and services are directly implemented using the public health capacity that has been built at AMBSO.
The Uro Care/AMBSO/IDI – Sub grant arrangement
Through this arrangement, the Uro care -IDI sub grants have been successfully implemented by AMBSO in observance of the memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to provide VMMC services to men aged 10 years and above in Wakiso District.
What AMBSO has achieved (Targets vs Timelines)
The initial Uro Care- IDI partnership for VMMC was in 2015, where Uro Care started by circumcision 1,700. Bigger targets of 10,000 circumcisions (in a period of 6 months) have been subsequently awarded to Uro Care Ltd under a sub-grant model for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, and starting 2017 the direct implementation of VMMC activities was taken over by AMBSO.
Currently ~40,000 males aged 10 years and above have been reached with the Uro Care/AMBSO VMMC services. Since November 2019 to-date, AMBSO is undertaking direct implementation of another 10,000 circumcisions under the same arrangement as explained above.
Capacity and Training under the VMMC Program
AMBSO, working closely with Uro Care Ltd has lined up expertise which plays an innovative complementary role to different implementing partners in terms of skills development and communication initiatives.
AMBSO together with Uro Care also provide technical support in the training and scale up of new circumcision methods. The technical team has supported national trainings and Training of Trainers (TOTs) at the central VMMC clinic.
